Principio Furnace

An important iron foundry in early American history of the Chesapeake, was Principio furnace, owned by Nelson Price Whitaker.  Located at the head of the Susquehanna flats, The Foundry at Principio supplied decoy bottom weights, decoy anchors, iron wing ducks, stoves for boats and other iron items used in the market hunting of waterfowl on the Susquehanna flats.

Founded March 4, 1720 London, Principio furnace evolved from it's English heritage like the Chesapeake bay culture in general.

There are few places with a colonial past and history like Maryland.  There are many signs like this throughout the state.  Below is what's left of the once prosperous iron works.  Photo taken on April 18, 2006

The remains of the foundry today.  Located on Route 7 about 5 miles North of Havre de Grace.
