Chesapeake Waterman's world  (Donald's site)

I found Donald's site in the far backwaters and lost pages of the internet.  Donald was a modern waterman of the Lower Chesapeake.  When you read the site you will gain rare insight into the waterman's way of life and thinking.

Donald's life was complete immersion in the rural life of the Eastern shore of Maryland.  His days were filled with waterfowl hunting, fishing, crabbing and nature.

A waterman's life can be dangerous, exciting and at the same time somewhat lonely.  Donald was reaching out over the internet to share his unabashed joy in the thrill of the hunt, and the emotional attachment to the natural world that can only be achieved through participation in the cycle of life and death.  This passion had not dimmed thru his life span.

Simple but effective prose fills the pages in a style that is genuine. A sparse style that writer's such as Hemmingway used to effect, convinces us that indeed, this is the real deal, not fiction.  The words, phrasing and spelling is a little rough, but then so to is the waterman's life.

Donald enjoyed the bounty of the bay, and frequent descriptions of the Chesapeake's table fare is evident and interesting.  Poor health dogged his later days, and although he had various heart operations, he kept to the waters and woods, doing what he loved,  following the trail of man's most ancient and vital archetype, the hunter.

Be sure to view great photos of Canvasbacks on the Choptank river on Donald's site.    View site here.
